Flood damage

Rising water and storm surge require a separate flood policy — we write those too.

Common questions about florida homeowners insurance policy

Is homeowners insurance required in Florida?

The state doesn't require it, but virtually every mortgage lender does. Even without a mortgage, going uninsured in Florida means shouldering hurricane, fire and liability losses entirely on your own.

Does my policy cover hurricane damage?

Wind damage from a hurricane is typically covered, subject to a separate hurricane deductible (usually 2%–5% of your dwelling limit). Flooding and storm surge are not — those need a flood policy.

How much does home insurance cost in Florida?

Most Florida homeowners pay roughly $2,400–$2,700 a year for an average-sized home, though location, roof age, construction and your deductible move that number a lot in both directions.

How can I lower my premium?

A wind mitigation inspection, a newer roof, impact windows, a monitored alarm, a higher deductible and bundling home and auto are the discounts that move the needle most.
